Désormais, la narrative est, à Washington, que les élections de novembre prochain vont être catastrophiques pour Obama. La narrative n’est pas loin d’une très sérieuse possibilité mais elle devient une sorte de rythme obsédant de la vie politique et finit par créer sa propre réalité, faisant naître de multiples hypothèses catastrophiques. Obama lui-même, qui appelle Clinton à la rescousse, y est sensible et y contribue.

D’où la floraison des hypothèses. Il y a celle d’une attaque contre l’Iran pour assurer une victoire de démocrates. Il y a désormais celle, qui est un grand classique de toute élection US, d’une attaque terroriste provoquée, pour indirectement provoquer un mouvement de rassemblement autour du président. Le docteur Jack Wheeler, un dur de dur situé à l’extrême droite des neocons, expose cette hypothèse qui lui plaît manifestement, et il y trouve évidemment une confirmation dans un article du Financial Times du 13 juillet consacré à la difficile position d’Obama. Wheeler se cite d’abord lui-même, en date du 8 juillet 2010, dans une analyse où il décrivait une fois de plus Obama comme un doctrinaire communiste, ou, dans tous les cas, un agent socialiste…
