Explication de MSM (également par Gore Vidal)

Alertés sur un texte par un de nos lecteurs (voir sur notre “Forum”, le message de Francis Lambrechts, au 21 juin), nous découvrons dans le texte de Alex Koppelman, sur le blog Huffington Post, du 20 juin (« Think There's Anti-War Bias in the Press? Think Again. ») une explication que nous recherchions et qui nous concerne.

Dans son premier paragraphe, Koppelman nous instruit en effet de la signification d’une abréviation que nous rencontrons depuis quelques semaines : MSM. Voici :

« I don't need coffee to wake up in the mornings anymore. As a member of the mainstream media (“MSM,” for those in the know) I have an internal alarm clock. My all-consuming hatred for President Bush — my “Bush Derangement Syndrome,” if you will — and the consequent desire to see the United States lose in Iraq in order to embarrass the president, gets me going. It's been great — I save at least $6 a day on Starbucks. »

Voilà donc la signification de MSM: “MainStream Media”, ce que nous avons coutume également de nommer dans notre jargon “presse officielle” ou “presse assermentée”. Ils ne sont pas tous pitoyables (à preuve, Koppelman) et Dieu reconnaîtra les siens. Pour le niveau général, tout est dit.

Nos lecteurs sauront donc ce que MSM signifie. Ils sauront également ce que le cher Gore Vidal pense de MSM (dans The Independent du jour) : « This is what happens when you have control of the media, and I have never known the media more vicious, stupid and corrupt than they are now. »

Qu’est-ce que Vidal entend par “This is what happens”? Notamment ceci, qui dit tout, et notamment la filiation de MSM puisqu'il s'agit de corruption (aussi bien de la psychologie dans ce cas):

« Benjamin Franklin was shown the new American constitution, and he said, “I don't like it, but I will vote for it because we need something right now. But this constitution in time will fail, as all such efforts do. And it will fail because of the corruption of the people, in a general sense.” And that is what it has come to now, exactly as Franklin predicted. »
