Hong Kong entre Churchill et l’agonie

Le Financial Times (FT) emploie un ton bien significatif pour présenter l’ “accord” de Hong Kong. On a le choix entre l’Angleterre de 1940 aux abois et le malade dans le coma, en phase terminale.

Le commentaire des envoyés spéciaux choisit le ton churchillien, mais en négatif, c’est-à-dire beaucoup d’opiniâtreté, de travail, de volonté, pour aboutir à quelque chose qui est proche du vide complet. « It is tempting, and scarcely an exaggeration, to sum up the meeting of World Trade Organisation ministers in Hong Kong, which ended yesterday, by paraphrasing Winston Churchill: rarely in the history of international negotiations have so many laboured so long to produce so little. »

L’édito du journal, lui, préfère le vocabulaire hospitalier. C’est du genre : ne tirez pas sur l’ambulance, ce serait gaspiller… « At the end of the week-long ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organisation in Hong Kong, the Doha round of multilateral trade negotiations is still breathing, but only just. The ministers have kept it on life support. But negotiators will have to resuscitate early in the new year. »
