La plus étrange hypothèse des présidentielles US de 2008

C’est d’abord comme un signe du climat de désordre latent qui règne dans la vie politique US qu’il faut apprécier la nouvelle mise en ligne le 28 novembre par Nick Juliano, de RAW Story. Il s’agit de l’hypothèse d’un “ticket” présidentiel Kucinich-Paul, les deux candidats démocrate et républicain à la désignation de leurs partis, tous deux considérés comme complètement marginaux, tous deux dénoncés comme “extrémistes” dans leurs partis respectifs.

Ce n’est pas seulement une spéculation plaisante et dans l’air d’un temps où les combinaisons habituelles se défont et les prévisions des élections sont caractérisées par le désordre et l’incertitude. C’est une hypothèse qui a été évoquée par Kucinich. Elle est par contre repoussée par Ron Paul, mais dans des termes très conciliants.

«Call them 2008's odd couple: Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich says if his long-shot bid for the presidential nomination were successful, he'd ask Republican Ron Paul to be his running mate.

»The two men are lagging in opinion polls of their parties' primary voters, but exploding in popularity among online supporters. With their powers combined ... well, who knows what would happen. Kucinich raised the possibility of a gadfly team-up at a recent campaign stop in New Hampshire, although the idea has been kicking around for months in blogs and Internet forums.

»Rep. Kucinich (D-OH) recently told a crowd of supporters in New Hampshire that a ticket featuring him and the libertarian Texas congressman would help “balance the energies in this country,” according to a Cleveland Plain Dealer blog.

»“It would create a stunning, if dizzying, blend of beliefs, wedding two politicians who hold different views on abortion rights, the role of government in providing health care, and the use of government in fostering – or hampering – the public's greater good,” report the newspaper's Sabrina Eaton and Stephen Koff.

»Indeed, it wouldn't be the first time the two vehemently anti-war lawmakers joined forces. Earlier this year Paul and Kucinich teamed up to co-sponsor a bill that would've revoked President Bush's authority to wage war in Iraq.

»However, even if Kucinich can bolster his support enough to topple the Hillary Clinton-Barack Obama-John Edwards juggernaut currently battling for Democratic primacy, such a pairing is nearly impossible.

»“Dr. Paul and Rep. Kucinich are friends and there is a lot of mutual respect,” Paul communications director Jesse Benton told the reporters. “They have worked, and will continue to work, together on the ending the war and protecting civil liberties.

»“However, Ron wants to substantially cut the size and scope of the federal government. There are too many differences on issues such as taxes and spending to think a joint ticket would be possible.”»

Les deux hommes ont une position évidemment assez proche, dans la mesure où ils font tous deux appel aux réseaux alternatifs.

• Kucinich connaît un fort succès sur Internet alors qu’il occupe une place très faible dans les pointages officiels de son parti. Il a pour l’instant récolté peu d’argent. Il espère faire “un gros coup” dans les donations le 15 décembre prochain, pour l’anniversaire de la Bill of Rights de 1791. Il voudrait récolter $10 millions. Kucinich apparaît certainement plus comme un “original” que Ron Paul, proclamant son intérêt pour la philosophie New Age, affirmant avoir été témoin de la manifestation physique d’un UFO (Objet Volant non Identifié), etc. Son travail législatif est effectif et sérieux. Sa dernière initiative est une proposition de mise en accusation du vice-président Cheney, qui reste dans le processus de la Chambre, la direction démocrate n’ayant pas réussi à écarter la proposition. Récemment, l’écrivain Gore Vidal a assuré publiquement sonsoutien pour Kucinich.

• Paul a réussi un “gros coup” le 5 novembre, où il a récolté $4,2 millions selon l’argument de “V For Vendetta” inspiré du film du même nom. Il espère atteindre et dépasser $12 millions pour la fin de l’année, avec à nouveau un appel à la mobilisation les 15 et 16 décembre, pour l’anniversaire de la Boston Tea Party.

Des deux candidats, il est manifeste que Paul est le plus hésitant pour l’évocation d’une hypothèse si étrange Kucinich-Paul. Ron Paul est plus mesuré, idéologiquement plus strict, que l’exubérant Kucinich. Quelque chose dans l’hypothèse d’une telle alliance des extrêmes lui paraît intellectuellement insurmontable (leur désaccord sur le rôle du gouvernement est abyssal : Kucinich veut un gouvernement omniprésent, Paul veut sa quasi-disparition).
