La trouille révélatrice de la Pravda de Washington

L’édito du Washington Post du 29 juillet est un artefact révélateur de l’establishment washingtonien : sa trouille, ses tics, son arrogance intellectuelle, son sens naturel de la calomnie et de la propagande. Le candidat réticent à l’élection présidentielle mexicaine, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) y est comparé in fine (à peine) à Staline. (Titre de l’édito : « An Anti-Democracy Campaign — Mexico's presidential loser takes a lesson from Joseph Stalin. »)

Que se passe-t-il ? AMLO est vilipendé pour contester une défaite dont tout le monde sait bien qu’elle est à la fois juste, justifiée et dans le sens de l’Histoire ; il est vilipendé pour contester un système dont l’avancée démocratique est à l’honneur du système triomphant en Occident (on comprend que le Post soit impressionné, par rapport aux performances du système en Floride en 2000 ou dans l’Ohio en 2004) ; il est vilipendé pour avoir dit quelque chose qui se rapprocherait de quelque chose que Staline aurait dit, ce qui est tout dire, d’autant que cela est dit pour décrire la façon dont fonctionne le système de comptage des votes au Mexique (dans ce cas, est stalinien celui qui cite Staline et non celui dont l’action est décrite par la citation de Staline).

En bref : Washington trouille énormément à la pensée que AMLO sorte finalement vainqueur de l’élection. Extraits, pour le fun :

«  … over the past decade {Mexican institutions] have had an impressive record of impartiality and professionalism, even as candidates from once-persecuted opposition parties, including Mr. López Obrador, have won victory after victory. Mexico is still working on some of the institutional foundations of a democratic society, but the electoral authorities were a success story and a model for other nations trying to move from fake to real elections.

» Mr. López Obrador is doing his best to destroy that achievement. He has made wild charges of manipulation and fraud against the federal elections institute, without offering any tangible proof; international and independent Mexican observers detected no such abuse. He has demanded that the tribunal, which has until September to rule on challenges to the election, order a full recount of the votes, even though the law does not provide for one. A filing made by his campaign to the tribunal revealingly quoted Joseph Stalin: “It is those who count the votes who decide everything.”

» In fact, Mr. López Obrador is betting that the threat of chaos in Mexico will sway the seven members of the tribunal to overrule or annul the votes of 42 million citizens, regardless of legal niceties or the actual vote count. His advocates point out that a similar campaign stopped an attempt by his opponents in Congress and the current government to exclude him from the presidential race last year. That maneuver -- which we strongly opposed -- failed when President Vicente Fox wisely and responsibly backed down. Now Mr. López Obrador is making his own attempt to bend a brittle system to his purposes. He, too, should stop. »
