Le FT applaudit Chirac

L’affrontement Chirac-Blair fut homérique à Bruxelles. A côté des questions de fond, il y eut un affrontement de personnalités et une bataille d’effets ressortant de la tactique politique. Chacun jouait au billard à plusieurs bandes, chaque action étant faite pour obtenir des effets indirects.

Le plus remarquable, aujourd’hui, est le contraste entre la vigueur et la détermination de l’action du Britannique à Bruxelles et l’accueil de la presse britannique, saluant la performance mais émettant quelques doutes pour l’avenir immédiat (la présidence britannique, dès le 1er juillet).

Par contraste, on trouve certains articles élogieux sur Chirac, là aussi de façon assez inattendue. Il faut lire le rapide jugement donné par le Financial Times, qui reconnaît au Français une grande réussite tactique. Le titre du FT est particulièrement significatif : « Chirac makes the best of a bad hand » (“Chirac a tiré le plus qu’il pouvait d’une position affaiblie”). Extraits: »
