L’expert US s’effraie : Tsahal ne tape pas assez dur

La réalité de l’affreuse situation au Liban Sud est qu’elle est affreuse pour Tsahal, pour toutes les souffrances qu’endure Tsahal et les faiblesses qu’elle montre. En un mot, Tsahal ne tape pas assez dur, elle pèche par sentimentalisme, respect excessif des valeurs humanistes occidentalistes, sensiblerie déplacée en un mot.

C’est le constat d’un expert américaniste, venu du Pentagone et désormais membre éminent du Lexington Institute. Voici l’espèce de dialogue, terminant par la ferme réaffirmation de l’humanisme de Tsahal par un général israélien, — extrait d’un rapport de Defense News du 29 juillet sur la situation stratégique d’Israël.

« Dan Gouré, a former Pentagon official and now vice-president of the Washington-based Lexington Group, said the means and the methods by which the IDF has prosecuted its anti-Hizbollah campaign could lead to the collapse of Israeli deterrence.

» Gouré blamed Israel’s Western-oriented values for its difficulty in rooting out zealous guerrillas willing to die for their cause. He said nations like Israel and the United States will be forced to adopt even more ruthless tactics against their insurgent adversaries.

» “The mistake on the Israeli side is not understanding how ruthless they need to be,” he said. “Technology cannot replace resolve. But the Israelis can’t tolerate the casualties and, more important, they don’t want to inflict casualties. Unless they get uglier than their enemy, they’re going to lose this war.”

» But Brig. Gen. Alon Fridman, chief of staff of the IDF’s Northern Command, rejected this view, insisting that Israeli national resilience and the military’s blend of precision-strike and anti-guerrilla war fighting will ultimately prevail.

»  “We will never get uglier than the enemy,” Fridman said. “Our Jewish values and our moral code prevent us from descending down to their level. We’re going to continue this fight on our terms, despite the heavy costs.” »
