L’insoutenable légèreté de leur diplomatie

Quelques citations de l’ambassadeur des Etats-Unis à Kaboul, extraites d’un article du Daily Telegraph déjà référencé pour la description commentée des grands événements otaniens en cours.

«The American ambassador to Kabul has accused European members of Nato of jeopardising the future of the alliance by refusing to send troops to Afghanistan, or banning their forces from entering areas with heavy fighting.

»Ronald Neumann, who has survived two attempts on his life this year, said European nations must not turn “coward” and “run away” from fighting terrorism in Afghanistan.

»In an interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel, Mr Neumann said some Europeans “obviously resist the idea that you have an army in order to fight. And I have very little patience for that”.

Il s’agit d’un héroïque diplomate américaniste (il en faut, du courage, semble nous susurrer le Telegraph, pour échapper à deux attentats). Sa démarche est une montagne de subtilité. Il y a ce mélange de Talleyrand et de Metternich revu sur le rythme endiablé de Rocky-Rambo qui nous laisse éperdus.

Les Américains procèdent toujours de la même façon. Aux idées sommaires qui les habitent en permanence, correspondent des phrases sommaires et des images sommaires. L’ambassadeur US à Kaboul ne détonne pas. Son accusation de “couardise” des Européens (après tout, les USA ont reproché pendant des siècles aux Européens leurs guerres incessantes — ceci va avec cela) rejoint les démarches habituelles des néo-conservateurs de service, preuve que ces minoritaires-là sont à leur place là où ils sont.

Le courage américaniste est un défi redoutable lancé aux Européens. Il s’exerce en général à un contre dix, contre des civils irakiens ou contre des villageois afghans, avec l’appui intensif de l’U.S. Air force. Ou bien, contre un intervieweur terrifié du Spiegel.
