Même Friedman…

Le gros et pétulant Thomas Friedman, considéré en général comme le commentateur le plus influent en Amérique, est resté fameux pour certaines de ses objurgations sympathiques (« Give war a chance »). Libéral cachant difficilement (il est corpulent) un belliciste patenté, Friedman n’est pas un tendre, pas un de ces “Munichois” qui devraient avoir honte. Il a soutenu la guerre contre l’Irak, à laquelle il a trouvé bien du charme.

Eh bien, c’est tout dire : même Friedman commence à avoir des sueurs froides…

Dans sa chronique du 19 avril (accès payant), Friedman nous confie toutes les frayeurs considérables que suscitent chez lui l’équipe GW Bush, son fonctionnement, ses ambitions à l’encontre de l’Iran et, enfin, le fait que nous en ayons encore pour 33 mois… Après avoir affirmé qu’il préfère un Iran nucléaire à une opération militaire menée par Rumsfeld et mentionné aimablement « the level of incompetence that the Bush team has displayed in Iraq, and its refusal to acknowledge any mistakes or remove those who made them », il enchaîne un peu plus loin, vaillamment:

« I look at the Bush national security officials much the way I look at drunken drivers. I just want to take away their foreign policy driver's licenses for the next three years. Sorry, boys and girls, you have to stay home now — or take a taxi. ... You will not be driving alone. Not with my car. »

Malheureusement, on connaît le problème: « If ours were a parliamentary democracy, the entire Bush team would be out of office by now, and deservedly so. ... But ours is not a parliamentary system, and while some may feel as if this administration's over, it isn't. So what to do? We can't just take a foreign policy timeout. »
