Saviez-vous, vermisseaux inconscients, que le danger est plus grand que jamais? Mais, bienheureux vermisseaux, sachez que l’OTAN veille…

Il faut admirer la constance et l’entêtement des éditorialistes qui font leur petit travail de propagandiste de la foi. Aujourd’hui, l’OTAN les inquiète, les propagandistes de la foi, et avec elle, les Pays-Bas si fameux pour leur vertu. Et l’Afghanistan, cela ne vous inquiète pas? Et Al Qaïda, et l’Iran, vous être tranquille avec? (Tout ça, même tabac d’Orient, épouvantablement suspect.) Ignorez-vous qu’aujourd’hui, nous sommes « at a time when the threat to Western security is greater than ever »? Lisez le Daily Telegraph du jour, l’organe neo-con britannique, et vous en saurez plus.

On y apprend, de la même plume, dans la même foulée, que si les US ne sont pas intervenus en Afghanistan comme membre de l’OTAN, c’est à cause de la « Washington's preference for using its vastly superior military power to hunt down its enemies, rather than getting bogged down in Nato bureaucracy, as happened over Kosovo. » Cette épouvantable OTAN, avec son insupportable et paralysante bureaucratie, devient, hop !, par bonheur, dans le paragraphe suivant (sept lignes plus loin) « the West's most effective military alliance ». Ouf, ça craignait dur.

C’est vrai, tout cela est charmant, les éditorialistes-propagandistes anglo-saxons et neo-cons sont de vrais poètes de la foi. Ils nous font voyager. Et puis nous redevenons sérieux, — pour constater que, pour ce qui concerne l’OTAN, les Pays-Bas et l’Afghanistan, il y a panique à bord. Quand vous lisez ceci (l’édito du Telegraph), où vous découvrez qu’à côté des Néerlandais, d’autres misérables Européens sont coupables d’“esprit munichois”, vous ne pouvez que désespérer : « But just at the moment that Nato's 26 member states are finally facing up to their military obligations, the alliance faces a new crisis over the disinclination of a number of European states to put their soldiers in harm's way. This week's announcement that Nato's planned deployment to southern Afghanistan was to be delayed by several months was blamed on the Dutch government, which has had second thoughts about placing its soldiers' lives in jeopardy.

» But at least the Dutch are prepared to consider the possibility, which is more than can be said for Europe's main military powers — with the notable exception of Britain. Germany, France, Italy and Spain have all deployed troops in Afghanistan, but on the strict understanding that they be stationed in parts of the country — such as the relatively pacified north — where their soldiers' lives will not be imperilled.
