Trois hélicoptères US détruits en neuf jours en Irak

En neuf jours, trois hélicoptères américains ont été détruits en Irak. La question posée est de savoir si ces trois destructions sont dues ou non à des attaques hostiles. Voici ce qu’en dit la dépèche Reuters annonçant la destruction d’un nouvel hélicoptère ce matin près de Bagdad: « A U.S. helicopter crashed just north of Baghdad on Monday, witnesses and the military said, in what appeared to be the second shooting down of an American aircraft in three days.

» The U.S. military confirmed that the helicopter went down but was still investigating the cause of the crash. A military spokesman had no comment on the fate of the crew or the type of helicopter. Earlier, witnesses said the aircraft went down after coming under rocket fire in the small town of Mishahda. One witness said U.S. troops surrounded the crash site, where smoke was rising.

» Rebels in northern Iraq apparently shot down an armed U.S. reconnaissance helicopter [KH-58 Kiowa] on Friday, killing its two pilots, in a rare instance of American air power being challenged by guerrillas on the ground. Just six days earlier, all 12 people aboard were killed when a Black Hawk helicopter went down close to the nearby northern city of Tal Afar, though that has so far been blamed on weather. »

Il y a des doutes extrêmes pour ce qui concerne les prises de position officielles US concernant la destruction d’hélicoptères en Irak. La politique officielle est d’en dire le moins possible et, quand la possibilité s’en présente, de déguiser en accident une intervention hostile. Pour les Américains, la vulnérabilité des hélicoptères est un des maillons faibles de leur logistique en Irak. Une part importante des communications, du ravitaillement et des interventions armées ponctuelles se fait à l’aide d’hélicoptères. La vulnérabilité de ces engins aux tirs de sol, y compris des armes individuelles (des missiles sol-air portables aux simples armes automatiques), est connue. Une trop grande publicité faite à la destruction d’hélicoptères US pourrait susciter une émulation dans les divers groupes hostiles, craint le commandement US. On comprend évidemment les répercussions que pourrait avoir une augmentation des pertes d’hélicoptères.

Quoiqu’il en soit, la destruction de ces trois hélicoptères en une décade constitue un événement nouveau dans la guerre d’Irak. C’est le même chiffre (trois) que le nombre d’hélicoptères US abattus durant toute l’année 2004.
