Hi, from a Spanish lector. First, let me tell that I am a long time reader, usually in agreement with you. Let me also add that you must excuse me for not writing french. I can read it, but I can not write it.
I write to you in order to correct what I think is a bad interpretation of the Eon-ENDESA case, in which the goverment is trying to forfeit the buy out of a spanish company from a german one. You take this as a another example of the recovery of economic nationalism. As first sight, It could be interpreted as so.
But we Spaniards are aware that this is no the case. The goverment is not trying to defend ENDESA, but to make easy for GAS Natural to buy it. From the very beginning, a new administration is pushing hard a merger, from which a small catalan company GAS NATURAL is swallowing the national champion ENDESA. I am not going to relate you the details of the case. LEt me just tell you that we are not dealing with a company being help by the goverment. It is the goverment (more exactly: a industry minister) trying to convince and push a company (GAS NATURAL) to buy another (ENDESA). The small company, by the way, is making a ridiculous offer, much, much less of what the germans offer. They trust not their offer, but the menaces from a minister who has lost in the way any rest of shame.
So, let me advise not to praise the goverment. They do not want to defend a national champion. They want to protect their favorite company.
What is more, according to the recently approved Catalan Statute, the resulting company, whose headquarters would be in Barcelona, will not be controlled nor watched by the Spanish state, but by the catalan one. Furthermore, they will pay their taxes there. So, we are not talking about Spanish nationalism, but a catalan one.
The minister, by the way, wants to be the next President of Catalonia…
